Work has started
In order to be able to establish the native tree nursery, the site needs to be cleared of rushes and brambles. It is not quite the 1st of September so we are leaving the brambles be. But the site has a lot of rushes that haven’t been cut in quite a while so the flail is out to clear the site in no time. Today is day 2 and the space that is opening up is amazing. What you see in the foreground is a European Plum tree. It will need a lot of pruning this winter and it has popped up shoots all around, but hopefully with a bit of tender loving care we will be able to enjoy larger plums this time next year - they are very small this year but plentiful. Other trees we found are Birch, Hawthorn and of course Willow.
European Plum fact: the fruit of this tree is also know as “prune-plum”. The plums are high in sugar and can be dried to get prunes.
