Helping you grow your own forest
Local, Sustainable and powered by friends and neighbours
Take action on the big problems by acting locally.
We aim to develop and promote locally owned woodlands and hedgerows enhancing biodiversity and sustainability. We achieve this through seed collection, propagation and supply of certified Irish provenance trees; and through providing practical help and support for community powered woodlands creation.
From seed to sapling
We believe the best trees for anyone’s area are local trees. At Local Roots we are tramping around the best bits of Kerry’s hedgerows and woodlands collecting healthy local acorns, sloes, birch seed, hazel nuts and pine cones to name but a few. Our volunteers are getting their hands dirty sorting, planting and weeding. We are scaling up and hope to be able to donate 10,000 local trees to community projects each year from 2026 onwards.
Demonstration site
In January 2024 we planted a 1 hectare demonstration site in Cromane Co. Kerry under the Government’s Native Tree Area Scheme. Like any grant scheme it can initially be a daunting process. As we go, we aim to share everything we’ve learned; our application, our costs, our suppliers and our tips and tricks. Together we’ll help demystify the process.
Jam jar science class
With our Jam Jar science project we hope to grow the smartest native oak trees in Ireland. We are partnering with three National schools helping every student in 3rd class to grow their very own oak tree. The acorn grows roots down into the jam jar and a hardy stem with leaves up into the air - all while just sitting on the class window sill. The brains behind this initiative are our friends at Oakyworld.
